What Causes ADHD?

ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is frequently misunderstood. This partly arises because scientists and brain experts don’t fully understand this condition. Yet, with a vast amount of research conducted and continually underway, we are beginning to gain a greater understanding—and even greater compassion for those with ADHD.

So, why does ADHD happen in the first place? While this is a complex question, there are a few factors that are believed to lead to ADHD, as discussed in more detail below.

1. Genetics

ADHD runs in families. In fact, if someone else in your family has ADHD, it’s more likely you or your child will be diagnosed with similar. At the same time, researchers haven’t pinned ADHD down to a single genetic factor. Rather, genetics can play a part, but they also aren’t the whole story.

2. Structural Brain Differences

Studies have noted differing sizes of specific brain structures in those diagnosed with ADHD. In particular, research reported that five regions of the brain, particularly in children with ADHD, had delayed brain development. These areas of the brain are primarily located in the basal ganglia, the part of the brain involved in emotional control, cognition, and voluntary movement.

Interestingly, these brain factors weren’t as obvious in adults diagnosed with ADHD, further supporting the hypothesis that ADHD is linked to developmental delays as a child or young adult.

3. Other Factors

Individuals who have experienced a brain injury, have epilepsy, or were born prematurely further have a higher risk of being diagnosed with ADHD. Additionally, exposure to certain environmental risks may play a part, such as alcohol or tobacco use during pregnancy.
