5 Reasons We’re More Anxious Today
Anxiety may feel ever-present in your life. And you’re not imagining things. Rates of anxiety have climbed in recent years. And while there’s no single cause, modern life has introduced a set of triggers that previous generations didn’t have. So, here are five reasons why so many of us are struggling (and how we can help!).
1. We’re Always Connected
Between work emails, group chats, and social media notifications, our brains rarely get a chance to rest. In fact, being reachable (having those notifications on!) around the clock keeps our nervous system in a constant state of stress.
Without real downtime, this stress accumulates until it becomes harder and harder to switch off, even when we really want (and need) to.
2. Social Media Has Us Comparing Ourselves Constantly
Scrolling through curated highlight reels can make it feel like everyone else has it figured out. Whether it’s career milestones, vacations, or picture-perfect families, social media invites comparison at a scale we were never designed to handle.
Over time, this steady drip of comparison can chip away at your self-esteem and fuel anxious thoughts. It might have you second-guessing yourself, what you wear, your actions, and more.
3. The 24/7 News Cycle Feeds Our Fear
We now have access to breaking news from around the world at every moment of the day. While staying informed is important, constant exposure to crisis, conflict, and worst-case scenarios can leave us in a heightened state of worry.
And with doom-scrolling before bed becoming a habit for many, we’re not getting as deep of a rest as we need. We go to bed heightened, and we wake up heightened. Breaking this habit can, thus, be life-changing.
4. We’re Sleeping Less and Stressing More
Screen time, busy schedules, and racing thoughts are cutting into our sleep time. And poor sleep and anxiety feed off each other.
When we don’t get enough rest, our brains become less equipped to manage stress, making everyday challenges feel bigger than they are.
5. We’ve Normalized Being Busy All the Time
Somewhere along the way, being constantly busy became a badge of honor. Hustle culture tells us that rest is laziness and that we should always be doing more. But when we never slow down, burnout is inevitable, and with it comes anxiety, irritability, and exhaustion.
The good news is that anxiety is highly treatable. Therapy can help you identify your triggers, build healthier coping strategies, and find your way back to feeling like yourself again.
