Managing Stress With ADHD

Why Managing Stress is Crucial for Individuals With ADHD

mentally and physically as time goes on. Inevitably, it also poses a frustrating situation for the person with ADHD. And it can turn into a chronic cycle where you may get stressed about being stressed.

So, how does this impact ADHD? And what can someone with ADHD do to manage stress more effectively?

How Does Stress Affect ADHD?

Interestingly, research shows that ADHD symptoms are linked with higher stress levels. In fact, higher stress levels combined with ADHD leads to an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Stress actually impacts the same area of the brain as ADHD, an area known as the prefrontal cortex. This is why stress can make ADHD worse. On top of this, stress can lead to other cognitive impairments and serious fatigue. For individuals with ADHD, this may mean that their relationships, health, and school or work life significantly suffer when stress is thrown into the mix.

Managing Stress With ADHD

So, what can you do about stress with ADHD? Here are a few ways to manage it better.

1. Creating and maintaining routines

This can ensure that no tasks fall curbside. Stress can compound when things get forgotten about or we fall behind in our studies or work.

2. Using deep breathing techniques

Learning techniques to calm your mind can significantly help reduce stress. For instance, box breathing is well-known for reducing stress and anxiety. To perform this type of breathing exercise, inhale for four seconds, pause for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, then pause again for four seconds. Do three to five rounds.

3. Performing regular exercise

Regular exercise lowers the stress hormone, cortisol, as well as enhances cognitive function, such as alertness and focus. Getting proper movement daily can help manage stress and mood, preventing stress from worsening ADHD symptoms.

4. Hiring an ADHD coach

Working alongside a coach can help you or your child with ADHD develop healthy habits, routines, and stress management techniques.
